This organization was founded by Karen Akpan; Mom, Wife, Family Travel Blogger at The MOM Trotter and Travel Agent at Memory Making Getaways after her son Aiden Akpan asked her “Mom, where are all the brown people like us” during their travels. After noticing the disconnect, as she traveled with her son and family all over the world, this movement was born.
She also couldn’t find a group that solely promoted and encouraged ‘family travel’ as well as ‘travel with children’ for families of color so a facebook group – Black Kids Do Travel was created. She really wanted to know if children of color did indeed travel, and if they did, why wasn’t her family meeting any of them as they traveled.
The group was initially named “Black Kids Travel” and a few months after the group was created, the group name was changed to “Black Kids DO Travel,” because they really, do! And the Facebook group, Instagram page as well as this Blog is proof of that.
The Black Kids Do Travel Facebook Group was created as a safe place for families of color to share their travel experiences, and to encourage and inspire families of color to travel with their children as well as discuss issues that arise as a result of traveling to certain places. This group has grown into an amazing and very supportive community of traveling families.
